he 2097 Sporting Lux is Lanber’s competition-grade .1, 2 The British gun has a grey receiver, engraved with scrollwork and the Lanber name in gold.3 Its 30-inch barrels carry a red translucent front sight and a wide ventilated with a central channel.4

The barrels hinge on stub pins in the walls.5 Coil springs power the lockwork, and the gun has .6 The slides sideways in the safety.7

Identify and date

The Lanber name sits near the bottom of both action walls.3 On the American test gun, the selector shows one dot for the upper barrel and two for the lower.7 The British gun carries Spanish for 76 mm cartridges at 1,370 bar.13 Spain’s 1979 proof rules for smoothbores required a symbol for the year of proof on the barrels.16

Proof date

The 1979 regulation requires smoothbore barrels to carry a symbol for the year of proof. Later codes in the official table carry an asterisk, as in A*1, and the first series includes CH, LL and Ñ.16, 17

Before you buy

  1. Have both pulls checked: the British test gun had creep, and the American one a heavier pull on the top barrel.6, 7
  2. Check the and against your build: the British tester found both short.18, 6
  3. Count the choke tubes: the American test gun came with two flush and five extended.11
  4. Identify the thread before buying replacement tubes: Trulock lists Lanber Style separately from the American Arms Style fitted to Lanbers that American Arms imported.19
  5. Try the with damp hands: the American testers found its chequered sides slipped when their hands sweated.20

History

Gun Tests reviewed the 2097 Sporting Lux in September 2008.8, 2 It compared the gun with two other walnut-stocked 12- over-and-unders.2 The Lanber came with both flush and extended tubes.11 The gun tested in Britain had a grey, plasma-nitrided action.6, 3
