Overview
Magnus is Caesar Guerini’s over-and-under range for hunting and clay shooting.1, 2 The US Field gun has screwless sideplates with gold game scenes, and a case-coloured finish.3 It also has a Prince-of-Wales grip, a Schnabel fore-end and a wood buttplate.3
The US Field has a single selective trigger.4 The US Sporting has the adjustable DTS system, and in 12 bore the factory offers single and double release options.2 The Light has an aluminium-alloy frame and fore-end iron and a hollowed stock.5, 6 The maker can convert a gun from ejection to extraction and back again.7

Identify and date
The serial number sits on the receiver, in a position that varies by model and year.38 The proof marks appear on the barrels and action.39 The barrels also carry the chamber length, the barrel weight and the bore diameter measured 23 cm from the breech.39 The US Sporting has a black rubber pad and a ventilated centre rib.2 The Deluxe test gun had a rounded fore-end and a solid tapered rib.11, 12

Proof date
The stamp gives the year of proof. CZ applies up to 31 May 2020, and 20 from 1 June 2020. The later stamp encloses the year’s last two digits in a rectangle.40, 41, 42
Before you buy
- Read the chamber marking on the barrels: the 2007 US tables give 2¾ inches for the 28-bore Field and Sporting, but the US specification pages give 3 inches.26, 35, 4, 2, 39
- Identify the choke family before ordering replacements: the US Sporting comes with MAXIS Competition chokes in 12 bore and Competition Selecta chokes in 20 and 28 bore.2
- Check a combination set against its frame: Caesar Guerini USA does not offer small-gauge barrels for its twelve-gauge frame.43
- Confirm whether the gun ejects or extracts; the maker offers conversion in either direction.7
- Check the stock fit: the Compact has an adjustable 13.9-inch length of pull and a Monte Carlo stock.14
- Inspect the barrel pivots and fore-end latch, the points the manual specifies for lubrication, for signs of neglect.44
History
Magnus was among Caesar Guerini’s first hunting over-and-unders, introduced in 2001 in 12 and 20 bore.1 The 2007 US specification tables listed Field, Light, Sporting and Trap versions.27, 26, 35, 36 In those tables the 28-bore Field, Light and Sporting had 2¾-inch chambers, but the US specification pages give 3-inch chambers.26, 35, 4, 10, 2 A Deluxe tested in September 2026 was a 30-inch 20-bore with a rounded fore-end and engraved sideplates.34, 29, 11, 32
