he A400 Xtreme Plus is Beretta’s waterfowl , with Steelium Plus barrels and an extended charging handle and bolt release.1, 2, 3, 4 Beretta lists it with five extended Black Edition and a 7 × 7 mm .5 A gun tested in 2019 had a stepped rib, a red fibre-optic front sight and a metal mid-bead.6

The is gas-operated, with a rotating bolt head.7, 8 Kick-Off Mega places hydraulic recoil damping between the and buttstock, with a soft pad at the .9, 10 In the 2024 catalogue the has an 89 mm and the 20-bore a 76 mm one.5

Identify and date

The barrel side carries the and chamber length.32 OB HP beside the gauge identifies the Optima-Choke HP barrel, and the tubes are marked Optima-Choke-HP.33, 34 The Italian year stamp records the year of proof; from 1 June 2020 it shows the year’s last two digits inside a rectangle.35, 36, 37

Proof date

The stamp gives the year of proof. CZ applies up to 31 May 2020, and 20 from 1 June 2020. The later stamp encloses the year’s last two digits in a rectangle.35, 39, 37

Before you buy

  1. Read the gauge and chamber marks: the 2024 catalogue lists 89 mm chambers for the 12-bore and 76 mm for the 20-bore.32, 5
  2. Check that all five tubes of the catalogue set are present, and make sure replacements are Optima-Choke HP.5, 34
  3. Check the tubes for defects, warping, deposits and tightness.40
  4. Inspect the gas cylinder, piston, elastic piston seal and magazine tube for deposits.41
  5. Keep your fingers clear when you work the bolt release; Outdoor Life warns against touching it by accident.42
  6. Check whether the gun has a left-side cutoff: the 2019 test gun has one, and the 2021 test gun does not.26, 25, 29, 28

History

Beretta unveiled the A400 Xtreme Plus on 5 May 2018 at the NRA Annual Meeting in Dallas.11 The gun Shooting Times tested in 2019 has a left-side cartridge cutoff, but the one Outdoor Life tested in 2021 has none.26, 25, 29, 28 By July 2023 the range included a 20-bore, with Kick-Off, enlarged controls and a stepped rib.30, 7, 31
