he 687 Silver Pigeon V is an for game and sporting shooting.1, 2 Later guns combine deep scroll engraving with gloss-finished Grade 3 walnut.3, 4, 5 The earlier US V had a colour-case frame and gold game inlays.6, 7

The Silver Pigeon receiver derives from the 680 series and has trapezoid shoulders and dual conical .8 The V that Sporting Gun tested was a over-and-under.2 Later guns take Optima-Choke HP tubes.9, 10

Identify and date

In the UK, the Hunting gun has a 6 × 6 mm rib and the Sporting gun a 10 × 8 mm rib.17, 18 The barrel side carries the gauge and chamber length.29 Optima-Choke HP barrels also carry OB HP beside the gauge, and their tubes are marked Optima-Choke-HP.30, 31

The Italian records the year of proof.32 Beretta most often places it on the receiver or frame and on the barrel.33 From 1 June 2020, the has stamped the year’s last two digits inside a rectangle.34, 35

Proof date

The stamp gives the year of proof. CZ applies up to 31 May 2020, and 20 from 1 June 2020. The later stamp encloses the year’s last two digits in a rectangle.32, 37, 35

Before you buy

  1. On an early US gun, check the against its catalogue year: the 2004 catalogue lists a Schnabel, the 2005 catalogue a fluted beavertail.38, 39
  2. Read the barrel and tube markings before ordering replacement ; Beretta’s choke systems do not interchange.40
  3. If the sits left of centre, have a gunsmith assess the gun; on the 680 series, ClayShootingUSA treats that position as a sign of worn locking bolts and recesses.41, 42
  4. Try the pulls under supervision; Sporting Gun found them heavy on the V it tested.43
  5. On a UK B-Fast or Vittoria B-Fast Sporting gun, check that the adjusts as the configuration specifies.18

History

Beretta listed the Silver Pigeon V as new in its 2004 US catalogue.44, 45 That gun had a colour-case frame with gold game inlays, oil-finished walnut and a Schnabel fore-end.6, 7, 38

In the 2005 US catalogue, a fluted beavertail replaced the Schnabel fore-end.46, 39 English-stock versions were offered in 20 and 28 and .410.47 The colour-case frame and gold game inlays remained.48, 49

By September 2022, the later V had laser engraving and Grade 3 wood.50, 51 The 2024 catalogue offers Hunting and Sporting versions, with B-Fast and Vittoria options.9, 52 Across the Silver Pigeon range, the I has Grade 2 walnut, the III Grade 2.5 and the V Grade 3.53
