Origins

Miguel Aguirre and Nicolas Aranzabal, two Basque gunmakers, had worked with Eduardo Schilling, a German gunmaker based near Barcelona.1 In 1915 they returned to Eibar in Spain’s Basque country and established Aguirre y Aranzabal, or AYA.1 At first AYA made components for other companies.1 In 1938 it began making complete guns, with its name engraved on the barrels.1

AYA’s British connection came through Andrew and Peter King, who established Anglo Spanish Imports in 1958.2 The brothers supplied two guns as patterns: a Holland & Holland and a Westley Richards with an Anson & Deeley .3 These became the basis for AYA’s No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 4 de Luxe.3

In 1988 the DIARM consolidation of Spanish gunmakers collapsed.4 Imanol Aranzabal bought the remaining AYA parts and set up a workshop on Bidebarrieta in Eibar.5 By 1989 the revived business was again making fine double guns.6 In 2001 it moved to Otaola Hiribidea.6

Factories and partners

AYA occupied the building now known as Portalea from 1940 until the mid-1980s.7 The building stands at Bista Eder 10, Eibar.8 The revived company worked on the second floor of a building on Bidebarrieta before moving to 25 Otaola Hiribidea in 2001.6 Its head office is now on the third floor of Avenida Otaola 25.9

AYA credits its cooperation with ASI for the No. 1 de Luxe.6 It has invested in machinery that makes its own parts and those of other local firms.10 In 2025 its New Deal announcement invited customers to the Eibar factory.11 As AYA’s British importer, Manor & Co. also handles aftermarket care, servicing and warranties.12

Families and models

The No. 2, a sidelock introduced in the late 1950s, is mechanically identical to the No. 1.15 Both follow the Holland & Holland system.15 The No. 4 and No. 3 are Anson & Deeley-type boxlocks; the No. 3 is a non-ejector, and the Yeoman is a simpler version.23 The XXV configuration follows Churchill’s 25-inch barrels and high, tapered , in both sidelock and boxlock forms.24

Matador began as F.I. Model 400E in 1955 and acquired its name the following year.14 Matador II followed in 1964, and III in 1970.25 Matador production ended in 1985.17 The Centenary sidelock commemorated 1915–2015 with a run of up to 300 guns.19

Reading the names and numbers

No. 1 and No. 2 are sidelocks, and No. 4/53 is a boxlock with .26, 27, 28 No. 53 is a separate sidelock with a concealed third bite and sideclips.29 The standard No. 1 has Grade 1 wood, and the No. 2 Grade 2.26, 27 The XXV name refers to the Churchill 25-inch configuration.24

Marks

AYA adopted a lion as its emblem, and the lion remains on the main façade of the former factory.18 From 1938, when AYA began making complete guns, it engraved its name on the barrels.1 The Centenary has a gold logo, name and gun number.19 Spain’s 1979 proof regulation requires a year-of-proof symbol on smoothbore barrels.30

Spain introduced a national serial scheme in January 1995, with four groups separated by hyphens.31 The groups identify the manufacturer, weapon type, sequential number and year of manufacture.31 AYA’s first 1995 serial was 16-03-001-95, in which 03 is the shotgun type code.32
