he Remington 1100 is a gas-operated made in field, sporting, and versions.1, 2, 3 The UK Sporting 20 has a long, sloping blued receiver and a long with a full-length finger groove.4, 5 Its receiver is marked Remington 1100 on the left and Sporting 20 on the right.4

The parts of the gas piston sit around the magazine tube.6 The has a combined piston/piston-seal assembly and a barrel seal; the 20, 28 and .410 have a separate piston seal, piston and barrel seal.6 The safety is a button behind the .7

Identify and date

The LW-20 has a short barrel extension; the LT-20 has a longer extension with an integral ejection stud and a larger ejection port.12 The barrel date code sits on the barrel’s left side, by the frame, and it dates the whole gun only when the barrel is original.41, 42 Its month letters spell B L A C K P O W D E R X, from January to December.43 The year letters repeat, so K stands for both 1963 and 1990.44, 45

Before you buy

  1. Match any extra barrel to the exact model: Remington’s manual forbids swapping barrels between the 1100 and the 11-87, but the 2013 catalogue allows 11-87 Deer barrels on the 1100 G3.47, 48
  2. Inspect the magazine tube and piston assembly for combustion deposits, which Remington links to cold, damp conditions, excess lubricant and dirty-burning ammunition.49
  3. Check that an LT-20 spare barrel suits the receiver: it does not fit pre-1977 Lightweight or standard 20-bore 1100s.50
  4. Check that the tube and its threads have been cleaned.51
  5. Check the piston parts against the diagram for the gun’s : the 12-bore assembly differs from the one for the 20, 28 and .410.6
  6. Ask who has adjusted the trigger: Remington reserves that work for the factory or an authorised service centre.52

History

Remington announced the 12-bore Model 1100 in January 1963.8 The first range included Field, Skeet and Trap guns with 70 mm chambers and a Magnum Duck Gun with a 76 mm .2 The 28-bore and .410 arrived in 1969 on a smaller receiver.11

The LW-20 ran from 1970 to 1976, and in 1977 the LT-20 replaced it with a longer barrel extension and a larger ejection port.12 Left-hand Field and Skeet versions appeared in 1972, with left-side ejection and a reversed safety.13, 14 The Special Field followed in 1983 with a and a 21-inch ventilated- barrel.15, 16

Remington introduced its Rem Choke tubes in 1986.53 The 50th Anniversary Limited Edition of 2013 had a commemorative 1963 serial-number prefix and an engraved receiver.54 The Bicentennial Limited Edition of 2016 added gold-inlaid , C-grade American black walnut and a grip medallion.55, 56, 57 In 2018 Remington listed the Classic Trap and Competition Synthetic in 12 bore, and Sporting guns in 12, 20, 28 and .410 bore.10, 9, 3, 36, 37, 38
