Overview

The Purdey sidelock is a self-opening gun built on Frederick Beesley’s .1, 2 Purdey offers square, round and ultra-round action bars, each built to the customer’s requirements.3 Traditional rose-and-scroll engraving usually comes with a colour-case-hardened finish.4

The action uses energy kept in its mainsprings to open the gun, and it cocks as the gun closes.1, 5 Buyers choose double triggers, with an optional hinged front , or a non-selective inertia single trigger.6, 7 The work on a modified Southgate system.8

Identify and date

Purdey offers chopper-lump barrels with a choice of five profiles and individually cut , and stocks of Turkish walnut with a high-gloss .12, 13, 14, 15

A 1930s pair reviewed by The Field, Nos. 25459 and 25460, has 29-inch barrels, 2½-inch chambers, concave ribs, straight grips and full splinter fore-ends. Each gun weighs just under 6 lb 8 oz, and the chokes are improved cylinder and three-quarters.16, 2 An 1890 pair from the same magazine has 30-inch barrels, 2½-inch chambers, concave ribs, brush-polished actions and rose-and-scroll . Each of these guns weighs 6 lb 9 oz, and their shortened stocks measure 14¼ inches.17, 18, 19

The Purdey cocks on closing, unlike the Holland & Holland Royal, which cocks on opening and holds its opening spring in a tube beneath the barrels.5 London sit on the and action, and a year mark dates proof or reproof.20, 21 Purdey keeps its records by serial number and issues a two-page History Certificate as a PDF.22, 23

Before you buy

  1. Have repairs done by a gunsmith trained to best London standards; The Field calls the Purdey complex to work on.28
  2. Have the barrels inspected for thin walls, damage and loose ribs.29, 30
  3. Have the and action examined for cracks, ideally with the locks removed to inspect the stock.30
  4. Have the gunsmith check the springs, the fit at the breech and the straightness of the barrels, which relaid ribs may distort.31
  5. Find out which mechanism the gun has: Purdey used a mechanical gate system before its inertia system.7

History

Frederick Beesley devised the self-opening system in 1879, and Purdey helped develop and patent it in 1880.1 In the 1930s Harry Lawrence refined the WEM ejectors, removing the bow-shaped crossbar on the knuckle ahead of the kickers.32 In the 1970s Lawrence Salter perfected Purdey’s inertia-operated single trigger, the successor to the mechanical gate system.7
