he Browning Maxus is a offered in field, sporting and wildfowling versions.1, 2, 3, 4 Instead of a screw-on magazine cap, a Speed Lock lever secures the .5, 6 Wicked Wing Tungsten guns have an oversize bolt release and extended Goose Band tubes.7

The gun works on Browning’s Power Drive gas system.1 The safety button sits at the rear of the guard and shows a red band on the left when it is off.8 Barrels come in 3-inch and 3½-inch classes, and the manual forbids exchanging barrels between them.9

The serial number sits on the left side of the receiver, above the guard.127, 128 Browning’s serial numbers have separate fields for number, year and model, and the Maxus model code is 115.129, 130 In the year-letter key, ZM stands for 2010.131 Browning’s 2018 list of factories places the Maxus at Viana, Portugal; the barrel may read Made in Portugal or Assembled in Portugal, which Browning treats as meaning the same.132, 133, 134

Browning serial date code

Two letters encode the last two digits of the year of manufacture. Browning gives this key for the Citori in 1976–1997 and from 1999, the Superposed in 1976–1986 and the Auto-5 in 1976–1997. The Superposed places the type code first, as in 213RT01001. The Auto-5 example 01001RT151 and the later Citori example 01001NN131 place the serial sequence first. The Superposed and Auto-5 examples denote 1976, and the Citori example denotes 1999.137, 138, 139, 140

Before you buy

  1. Check that the Speed Lock lever closes fully and its release button sits flush with the .6
  2. Match any extra barrel to the gun’s and class: Browning forbids swapping between 3-inch and 3½-inch classes or fitting a barrel from another Browning model.9
  3. Read the -system inscription on the barrel before buying tubes: Standard Invector, Invector Plus and Invector DS tubes do not interchange.136
  4. Identify the piston sleeve before separating the gas assembly: the aluminium sleeve is attached to the piston and the polymer sleeve is not.141
  5. Inspect the gas piston and magazine tube for carbon deposits; Browning prescribes solvent and a nylon brush, and forbids a steel brush or removing the piston’s internal spring.142
  6. On guns with a Dura-Touch coating, look for stickiness, peeling or bubbling, which Browning identifies as deterioration of the coating.143, 144

History

Browning introduced the Maxus in 2009.12 The 2010 catalogue listed Hunter Grade 2, Composite and Camo Duck Blind configurations.73 In 2020 Browning offered Wicked Wing Tungsten SHOT Show Specials that paired Tungsten Cerakote with Realtree Max-5 or Mossy Oak Bottomland.7, 112

The Maxus II followed in 2021 with a conventional magazine cap in place of the original latch.145, 146 It kept the Power Drive gas system and added a soft cheekpiece, a larger bolt handle and a redesigned guard.145 The original Maxus is no longer in production.13
